The Maternity and Infant Health Hospital in Shanghai’s Changning District, founded in 1935, is an affiliated hospital of East China Normal University (ECNU). The hospital comprises seven clinical departments and two technical departments, serving approximately 640,000 outpatients and facilitating around 12,000 births annually.

On August 16, 2024, one of our active team members in Shanghai, April Ni, visited the hospital on behalf of the ABBA team. During her visit, she observed the babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) through the glass rooms and engaged in meaningful discussions about their wellbeing with members of the administrative team: Dr. Wenli Fang, Dr. Xinghai Tong, and Dr. Huoying Lao.
While learning about the hospital’s rigorous NICU protocols, April represented ABBA by donating five baby baskets containing 30 additional baby care items, including 60 bonding blankets and baby beanies. Our team also provided informational leaflets for new mothers to help them navigate the emotional and physical adjustments after childbirth and to familiarize them with the contents of our care packages.

This visit was deeply inspiring, offering valuable insight into neonatal care practices in another country and broadening our understanding of the challenges and compassion that define NICU environments worldwide.
